What do you get a middle aged man who can afford his own gifts, in the realm of reasonable affordability?
A lot of my friends work IT and as such they can get the nice things they want by themselves. What’s a budget of $50-$100 going to buy that’s going to be of any interest to them?
Interested to hear your thoughts, Elder Oppo. I’m a gift card/cash kind of guy - nice and simple.
Edit: Alcohol. Cheers
Edit 2: the enthusiasm of responses makes me feel good about Oppo. Here’s to you, lads and gals

Bourbon is usually a great gift. Most people are alcohol free individuals , enjoying all alcohol that is given to them for free.

Golf balls, but only if they are into golf. Otherwise a nice bottle of booze.

As a person who fits that description, for the most part, I would say don’t bother with “things” , unless you come up with something super personal and thoughtful that I don’t have.
Activities are fun - tickets to a game, dinner or drinks out, whatever.
But a thoughtful card is enough. Really. It is.

Personally, I hate gift cards. There’s a 50:50 chance that it gets lost before I use it, whereas cash goes right into the bank. Gift cards are an obligation that makes me feel bad.
I say make a donation in his name to a charity that he’d appreciate. Does he like animals? He’ll like $50 to a shelter more than some junk he doesn’t need.

Since I neither golf nor drink, the options presented here are meh . You are buying for me, right?
WilliamSW has it right, I think: look for an experience. Bought my dad a flight lesson, e.g., although I don’t remember how expensive it might have been.

If it’s a close friend, I like gag gifts. Makes for good stories years down the road.

I’m turning 40 next month. That used to be middle age, now it doesn’t feel that way, but I can relate.
Experiences — escape rooms, ropes courses, sporting events, HPDE, etc. Check Groupon for stuff you might not have thought of.
Consumables — bourbon, tequila, whatever his poison. Gift cards to fancy restaurants.
Durables — Shutterfly photo book (depending on your relationship with him and access to photos), flask filled with beverage above, check ebay for kitschy vintage computer or gaming stuff from when he was younger. Maybe an NES/SNES Classic or Raspberry Pi?
DO NOT GET: Gift cards to everyday places. That’s an errand. Anything referen
cing his age — too cliché and could backfire.

“Here’s a chore that you will need to accomplish in the next 12-24 months or you’ll lose $100. Oh, and in case you lose this little card, you will also lose $100. By the way, the store already recorded a sale of $100!”

Tap into their latent unrealized desires. The more innocent they seem the quieter you should keep it.

That’s actually not a bad idea, but instead, I tend to pick up general purpose visa gift cards with lazy expiration policies. Makes them easier to use. They are getting harder to find.

Right, I dropped hints (some very obvious) to my wife to get me either a BMW driving experience in Spartanburg, or a Porsche driving experience in Atlanta, which are about $350 for 1.5 hours in a reasonably fun car. It didn’t happen, although, to be fair, the specific car choice and date would be hard for her to guess.

My dad always says he has everything he needs so last year for his birthday I bought him a can of bear mace. Don’t know if that helps or not.

True story. Outside of wine and beer we buy ourselves, all the hard alcohol I have in the house were gifts from other people. And they’re awesome.

I haven’t heard bear mace before. One time I gifted a novelty (but functional) stun gun.

If you know his size, get him a nice item of clothing
, like a Ralph Lauren polo or some Sperry’s.

I’d say maybe some sort of aged alcohol. Perhaps a scotch or wine, depending on taste.

While I’m not middle aged, my wife did the flight lesson gift for me. It went over very well. I loved it! Would enjoy getting in to it if an MBA and working full time wasn’t totally life consuming.

My first experience in a small plane was a miserable experience: some mild turbulence and I was ready to throw up.
Now I’m just too lazy.

That’s a win-win. And the middleman only takes a few percentage points of cut.

Find a local go-kart place. Preferably at a “real” race track that also happens to have a kart track, where you can get on legitimately fast gas-powered karts. $50-$100 should buy a 3-5 race package. An indoor venue with electric karts will be a very distant 2nd, but still good option.
Make sure you go when they use the package, so you can punt them into the wall, in order to assert dominance.

If it’s someone who may put you in their will, think of it as an investment.
Otherwise, anything that says you put more than a nanosecond of thought will let them know you care. So basically, booze and go-kart races.

I’m buying everyone bear mace from now on. Brilliant!

I know someone who carries it when they walk their dogs at night. Not for bears, but I live in Chicago and you can’t be too careful.

Cool lego sets.... I have a great excuse now that I have kids, but I’d still be buying up a bunch of the sets that I have now even without the boys. There are some really cool sets out now. And oh yeah, just finished the Voltron set, fricken awesome!
